If you want a simple way to get more glowing and hydrated skin, then try one of the DIY essential oil glow serum recipes in the blog below. Here are three things I love about DIY glow serums (besides the obvious benefit of making your skin glow!):

  1. They’re easy to make
  2. They’re less expensive than most store-bought skin care
  3.  They’re totally natural and safe. Some of these serums are so natural that you could ingest them and you’d be just fine (not saying you should).

Another benefit is that you can customize them for what you need – certain essential oils help with acne while others help to even skin tone and many of them are anti-inflammatory and protective of skin. Most of them are multi-taskers, accomplishing at least two of these things at the same time. It’s hard to go wrong with whatever blend you choose to experiment with.

The three glow serums recipes below make great gifts as well because you can create them as uniquely as your friends or family and they have a luxurious yet handmade feel.

What You’ll Need for your Glow Serum

To make your personal glow serum, you’ll need: a glass dropper bottle (1-2 oz works well), essential oils of choice, and a carrier oil. Some of my favorites are listed and linked below.

Carrier Oils to Use

These carrier oils are preferred because they are beneficial for skin and have a lighter, less greasy feel:

Bottles to Use

You will want to mix your serums in a 1 oz glass bottle with a dropper top . Make sure you use glass and not plastic. Essential oils can leach plastic and are not safe to use. I like using a small bottle/vial like this that comes as a set from Amazon. If you choose a clear bottle, make sure to store it in a medicine cabinet away from sunlight and heat. You can even re-use an empty 15mL essential oil bottle and replace the top with a dropper.

The Best Essential Oils to Use for Skin

I use doTERRA essential oils for all of my oily DIYs, health hacks and non-toxic replacements. doTERRA has the most pure, potent essential oils you will find anywhere. Do not make your serum from drugstore or Amazon essential oils and expect to see results. These types of low-quality oils are often synthetic or have synthetic fragrance and other contaminants in them. They may smell nice but they won’t give you consistent results and may even irritate your skin.

3 DIY Face Glow Serum Recipes

These recipes to great to start with, but feel free to mix and match or add other essential oils as well. If you don’t have one of the oils in the recipe, don’t let that stop you from making it with what you have – it will still benefit your skin. The carrier oils can be swapped out as well since they all work great for skin and aren’t overly oily/greasy.

Directions

STEP 1: Put essential oils into your glass bottle per recipe.

STEP 2: Top it off with carrier oil, leaving just a bit of room at the top so that when you close the top it doesn’t spill over.

STEP 3: Shake it up to blend the oils (I suggest you give it a quick shake before each application)

How to Use Your Glow Serum

Face oils are just that – oily. That’s why I suggest using these serums as a final step in your skin care routine. Here is what I recommend for a typical skin care routine: wash your face, use toner, then follow up with moisturizer and/or glow serum. These serums continue to feel oily after applying unlike other types of serums, which is why they’re better as a last step to either replace or layer on top of moisturizer (depending on how dry/oily your skin is).

I often use them in place of moisturizer either before bed or on a morning when I won’t be wearing make-up or going anywhere. Otherwise the serum makes my skin a bit too oily for makeup and has a shiny appearance. You’ll want to experiment with this as different skin types will absorb them differently.

You can use this serum daily or a few times a week – whatever you prefer! Daily use is best for anyone with very dry skin. More frequent use will likely result in faster improvement to your skin if you’re looking for reduced signs of aging and glowing skin.

Non-DIY Skin Serums for a Glow-Up

If you’d rather have the work done for you, you can purchase some great non-DIY serums from doTERRA. Try the Immortelle roller which is full of rare, nourishing and anti-aging oils (Frankincense Resin, Hawaiian Sandalwood, Lavender Flower, Myrrh Gum Resin, Helichrysum Flower, Rose Flower). Another one to try is the Verage Skin Care Collection because every product includes essential oils, including the same Immortelle oils and more.

Other Essential Oils for Skin Health

The oils above are some of the best for skin, but there are many others that also benefit skin which you can experiment with. Everyone’s body chemistry is different, so you may find that you get better results from certain oils. Here are some other essential oils for skin to try based on benefit:
